Why can't I connect at my highest speed?
Initialization Strings Can Affect Speed. Did you know that connection speed on a 28.8/33.6 modem does not affect transfer rate? This is because all modems over 14.4 utilize auto baud technology that allows them to adjust speeds according to line conditions. Modem performance is mostly controlled by its initialization string (INIT string). By customizing this line in your modem configuration, you can exceed factory settings and sometimes achieve superior bandwidth. Many modem manufacturers regularly update their product INF files and by obtaining the current version from their Web Site or BBS you can be assured that your model is running at optimum specifications.
Also, 56k technology is dependant upon high quality telco switching equipment "in the field". To take advantage of the new 56k technology there may only be one analog telecommunications switch between BOTH modems (U.S. Robotics). POVN has contacted Verizon in regards to this limitation and has received the following answer:
"The exception being transmission problems encountered on passing through extended network equipment. This relates to some of our analog carrier equipment or ESA sites that the new technology may not be compatible with.Bear in mind we use several types of systems in the provisioning of service, so each area may present a unique problem."

Why do I keep getting disconnected?
Don't touch that dial or attempt to adjust your set! What you are experiencing is most likely a problem with the phone line between you and us. During weather changes, moisture gets into exposed connection boxes, many of which are damaged by snowplows during the winter, and their ability to transmit data is impaired. When your modem senses that the data it is receiving is unreliable, it will disconnect so that you can establish a better connection. The good news is that unless the problem is right at your house, you may be able to just dial in again and get a good connection. It's a good idea to wait a moment to allow the modem you dialed into to reset, and it can take several attempts but you should be able to get in. If this problem persists
or you are never able to maintain a connection call us, because there could be a problem with your hardware.
Here are the two things that you can do that may help connection problems on a WIN95/98 computer:
First make sure that the driver for your modem is the correct one, if not get the latest driver from the modem manufacturer as it will give you the best performance.
Next double click on my computer, double click on dialup networking, use your right mouse key to click on your connection to us, choose properties, click the configure button right underneath the modem, choose the connection tab, click the port settings, set the transmit buffer to the second notch from the left and then click ok until you are back to dialup networking, then close both windows and give it another try.

What are these screwy "error number xx" messages on my Macintosh?
These error messages give us weird, cryptic little numbers that just don't seem to make any sense. But don't fear! There is a freeware application called "Apple Error Codes," that you can download and use on any Macintosh. This useful little program provides a list of all the most recent error numbers on a Macintosh!
First, make sure you have Stuffit Expander, so you can decompress the file. If you don't have it yet, you can get it by clicking the link above. Then, just click here to download Apple Error Codes!
